One of the biggest stories in European football has been the surprising rise of Hertha BSC, the official club of this blog. The Old Lady of German football is sitting in fifth place in the table with three matches left before the winter break.
Even bigger news came this week when it was announced that Hertha are moving closer to being debt-free. As followers of this blog may remember, American private equity firm KKR was brought in to manage the debt. Aren't these companies great?
Well KKR has done its job and rest be assured, Hertha are on the upswing. In fact, the team can climb as high as third by beating underachieving Bayer Leverkusen this weekend. The Champions League is surely within sight and once the final debts are taken care of, Hertha can spend, spend, spend their way to glory and join Europe's footballing elite!
Will the big city clubs ever spend to their potential or is Hertha destined to be a mid-table club in the Bundesliga? Your thoughts as a supporter Phantom? I'm not too familiar with the level of fan support this club receives in Berlin.
ReplyDeleteI am not ThePhantom but as a Hertha supporter I can say the club is beloved, it's just that we haven't been good enough for such a fantastic city - really the best city in Europe. We average 50,000 fans in our stadium. Also check out our overseas support in Twitter accounts in the UK (https://twitter.com/herthaberlinuk) and the U.S. (https://twitter.com/herthaberlinusa) so you know the hype is real.

DeleteWell I am the Phantom and I agree with the comment above. We are a great club and represent the capital city of the country that produced the World Cup champions so it's just a matter of cleaning out our past mismanagement before we reach our potential. I think in 2030 the big European rivalry between Hertha and Real Madrid will be epic.
